Ascent of Cerro Riñón – Rio Pico

Ascent of Cerro Riñón – Rio Pico

🥾 Hikes among glacial lakes, forests, and unforgettable panoramas

In the southwestern corner of Chubut, near the quiet village of Río Pico, stands Cerro Riñón (Kidney Peak), an emblem of Patagonian hiking that combines effort, beauty, and isolation in perfect doses.

This guided excursion invites you to explore trails that wind through lenga forests, rocky slopes, and natural outlooks, culminating in spectacular views of the lakes Vintter, <strong data-start=‘797’ data-end=“807” Guacho, and Falso Engaño lakes, right on the border with Chile.

🏔️ Why choose Cerro Riñón?

  • Mid-mountain challenge: The trail to Cerro Riñón is moderately difficult, ideal for hikers with average physical fitness. The summit reaches 1,800 meters above sea level, and the total round trip usually takes between 5 and 7 hours, including breaks.

  • Unspoiled and secluded surroundings: Unlike the more well-known trails in the northern mountain range, here you can hike without crowds. The connection with the landscape is profound, and the feeling of immensity is complete.

  • Unique panoramic views: From the summit and intermediate points, you can enjoy views of turquoise lakes, hanging glaciers, and mountain ranges that mark the natural border with Chile.

  • Andean flora and fauna: On the ascent, you can see lenga trees, flowering notros, birds such as the giant woodpecker, and—with luck—huemules or Andean condors.
